Xmetisse is an unaccelerated X server ... so it is "slow" vs
other (FvwmCompositor is "accelerated", for example, moving a window
with transparency is *fast*).

However, with a reasonable computer scrolling should be ok. About firefox
see if "smooth scrolling" is enable and check the difference with and
without it (I use smooth scrolling but ...).

Also to speedup Xmetisse start your regular X server at depth 16 and
use the -depth 16 option when starting Xmetisse (see doc/howto.html
for more details).

Recent cvs allows to compile with --enable-mmx (option to configure).
This may improve drawing speed (bof).
